Lawrence cites inspiration to youth for JWN's support of Sports Awards
Citing the RJRGleaner Sports Foundation's Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award as an inspiration to the nation's youth in aspiring towards sporting excellence, Clement 'Jimmy' Lawrence, chairman of J. Wray and Nephew (JWN) Limited, said it was key to their long and continued support of the national event held last night at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.
Some of the nation's finest ever athletes including track and field stars Usain Bolt, Merlene Ottey, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce have copped the prestigious award.
"We have for a very long time supported the RJRGleaner Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards," said Lawrence.
Last year's World sprint hurdles champion Omar McLeod, and swimmer Alia Atkinson were crowned Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year respectively last night.
"We do this with pride because we recognise the need to elevate our sportsmen and sportswomen in their craft."
He added: "This is an area that offers great opportunity for aspiring youth to the extent that they're recognised not only by their peers, but their country and institution.
"It serves to inspire our youth to pursue excellence in sports and our participation is most welcome and we look forward to continue in the foreseeable future," added Lawrence, whose company has been supporting the event for decades.
JWN's contributes in cash and kind to the RJRGleaner National Sportswoman and Sportswoman of the Year event for its media launch, welcome reception, awards and After Party.
Chairman of the RJRGleaner Sports Foundation's Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards, Gary Allen, has lauded JWN for its contribution.
"Wray and Nephew is one of the most valuable partners to the RJRGleaner Sports Foundation's recognition of excellence in sports. As a sponsor JWN provides financial support which is crucial," Allen said this week.
"In addition, JWN is the only partner we have which regularly hosts one of the events we hold for our stakeholders during the week of recognition," added Allen, who is also chief executive officer of the RJRGleaner Communications Group.
