Organisers make changes to Digicel Grand Prix
The organisers for the Digicel Grand Prix Athletic Championships, which was launched on Wednesday, have tweaked the process by which athletes qualify for the Digicel Grand Prix Athletic Championships, which was launched on Wednesday, have tweaked the process by which athletes qualify for the Grand Prix Final/G.C. Foster Classics with the hope of making the meet more competitive.
In previous years, the winners and runners-up in each event at the regional meets automatically qualify for the final, but this year only winners will be guaranteed a spot.
"Last year, we had top two from each region, but this year it's top one and next four best times. Because what you want is the best of the best," Ricardo Martin said. "What happened last year is that in some of the events some people were winning and some were so far behind. We want real competition."
The Grand Prix will kick off on February 12 and 13 at the Eastern Championships inside the National Stadium. The Corporate Area Championships, which was founded by Martin, will follow two days later on February 15 and 16 at the same venue.
The boys' qualifiers for Western Championships will be on the February 13 at Catherine Hall, in Montego Bay, while the girls' equivalent will be held at St Elizabeth Technical High School on February 15. The finals will be on February 17 at Catherine Hall.
