The Jamaica Cycling Federation (JCF) will stage its first development meet for 2018 next Sunday at the National Stadium velodrome.

Both professional and recreational cyclists have been invited to the first of five development meets to be held between February and August this year. The JCF is using the event to identify new talent to compete in local and international events, as well as to engage recreational cyclists across the country. Sunday's meet will consist of 14 endurance and sprint races in various categories, including an All-Comers Event which is open to all riders.

Critical for preparation

"These development meets are critical in assisting our athletes to prepare for a very busy racing calendar with over 20 local and international events starting with the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April. We are also encouraging riders under 19 years to participate in these development meets to get a feel of riding on the velodrome as the Federation has plans to introduce cycling in schools this year," added Joylene Griffiths, president of the JCF.

Registration for the event will open at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the races will start at 1 p.m. The registration fee is $500, with cash prizes for the winners of all 14 races. The other development meets will be held on March 11, April 8, July 8, August 19 and end with the National Track Championships on September 9 and 10. Entrance is free to the public.
