Kingston College’s (KC) head coach Ludlow Bernard was a relieved man yesterday after his team scored late at Winchester Park to earn a 1-1 draw against rivals St George’s College and a share of the 2018 Roper Cup.
Chantomoi Taylor gave the Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell-coached St George’s College the lead in the 15th minute. However, substitute Jhavon James handed the Purples a share of the trophy when he netted in the 82nd minute. The schools played to a 0-0 draw in the Under-35 match.
Bernard said the encounter between the Manning Cup squads was a good outing for his team because they had to dig deep to earn the draw.
“It was a good test because we really needed this kind of outing,” said Bernard.
“St George’s are a very good team and they really did play some very good football and it kind of forced us to do some really good thinking out there on the pitch. I really liked the fight from our players to really peg back a goal and eventually we will get it right,” he added.
Marcel Gayle, assistant coach of St George’s, was also pleased with his team's efforts.
“I think it was a good performance overall from my players," said Gayle.
“We have some areas that we still have to work on and to make some improvements before the competition starts,” he said.
The speedy Taylor gave the Light Blues the lead when he fired home a powerful 25-yard right-footed shot against the run of play past custodian Nathaniel Francis.
Dwayne Atkinson came close to giving KC the equaliser five minutes later but his effort from 10-yards was tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Darren Valentine.
However, James found the equaliser with eight minutes remaining when he ran on to a loose ball inside the 18-yards box to fire past Valentine.
Earlier KC won the George Thompson Trophy after a 3-0 aggregate win over St George’s. KC’s Under-14 team defeated their counterparts 3-0 while the Under-16 teams played to a 0-0 draw.
St George’s won the Pancho Rankine Trophy after their over-35 team defeated KC 3-0.
