Rusea's forward takes aim at daCosta record
Rusea’s High School’s winger Kenroy Campbell is aiming to break the daCosta Cup's goalscoring record this season and yesterday he was the outstanding player as the defending champions opened their 2018 ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup campaign with a 4-0 victory over Green Island High School at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Campbell (22nd), Cory Matthews (34th) and Jhavoy Diaz (37th) put Rusea’s 3-0 up in the first half before Bobby Brown sealed the match with a fourth goal in the 75th minute.
“I want to take my team to the final this year again and end as the competition’s leading goalscorer and MVP. Some people are already putting a number on the amount of goals I’ll score this season. For me, I want to score as many goals as possible to break the record,” said Campbell.
Campbell who started at left fullback last year for the defending champions is relishing the opportunity given to him by the coach to play higher up the field this season.
“It’s a good look, I think the coach is looking for more attacking play and goals this year. So they are trying me in a more attacking position where I can get these goals for the team,” said Campbell.
Dwayne Ambusely , assistant coach of Rusea’s, was impressed by the performance of his front three especially Campbell but wants them to be more clinical.
“Our strong point is the front three of Mathews, Diaz and Campbell," said Ambusely. He added that the team looks a potent one but the midfield needs to step up.
"The midfield that consisted of the two Browns (Bobby and Rasheed) and Chad Howell was a bit lethargic at times today,” he added.
In the first match of the double-header, defending Manning Cup champions Jamaica College were held to a 1-1 draw by Hydel High School. Javain Thompson gave JC the lead in the 48th minute but Hydel grabbed a point when Kemar Reid scored from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.
