KC dedicate win to late student
Kingston College's (KC) head coach Ludlow Bernard said the team has dedicated the school's 8-0 victory over Dunoon Technical in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup to student Malek Grannell, who died from sickle-cell disease on Sunday.
KC, who were semi-finalists in the competition last year, were led to victory courtesy of a brace each from Oneeko Allen, 33rd and 90th minutes, and Treyvone Reid, 42nd and 59th minutes.
Ronaldo Robinson (29th), Trevor Tingling (38th), Renato Campbell (56th) were the other scorers for the North Street-based institution. There was also an own goal in the 49th minute.
Bernard said that Grannell was actively involved with the team and that he would be missed by all.
"He is accustomed to being around the team. He was suffering from sickle-cell disease and he would have been here today, very much alive and sharing with the guys, but unfortunately, he took another step elsewhere," said Bernard.
"As a show of some respect, we figured that it would have been appropriate for us to wear the black armbands," he said.
"It is a camaraderie thing with the Fortis family. When one of us has fallen, we are going to pick up the slack and we are going to do it for him," Bernard said.
Reflecting on his team's opening game victory, Bernard said his players gave a good account of themselves despite a slow start.
"It was a fair performance," said Bernard. We started pretty slowly, but I know that despite the quality of the team, nervousness had a role to play in our slow start," he said.
"It being the first game of the season, we are pretty satisfied with the performance levels," Bernard said.
