The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) last Friday announced plans for the 2019 staging of the Crystal Spring Run For Your Heart 5K/2K.

The run, scheduled for Sunday, February 3, 2019, is aimed at raising funds to offset costs associated with the purchase of new equipment for the HFJ and to keep the organisation's screening services at a subsidised rate.

"We are excited to launch the Run For Your Heart 5K, which stems from the merger of our traditional Run for Your Heart Lap-a-thon and Heroes of the Heart 5K," said vice-chairman of the HFJ, Winston Barrett. "Today is exciting as the Foundation embarks upon a new mission that perfectly aligns with our mandate of promoting heart health. All Jamaicans can be 'Heart Hero' by helping a fellow Jamaican in need of screening."

Senior Manager of Marketing and Fund Development at the Foundation, Karen Anderson, noted: "The Run For Your Heart 5K is a great way for individuals to participate and help promote a healthy lifestyle in Jamaica."

Anderson also announced that for the first time, the HFJ will be including a 2K aspect for children to share in the movement.

Race Director, Alfred 'Frano' Francis in an overview of the run, reiterated that the race will begin promptly at 7 a.m. at Emancipation Park.

The race route starts on Oxford Road, outside Emancipation Park, then proceeds northerly along Oxford Road, left on to Old Hope Road, left on to Windsor Avenue, left on to Fairway Avenue, left on to Lady Musgrave Avenue, right on to Trafalgar Road, left on to Holborn Road to Chelsea Avenue, then left on to Half Way Tree Road to the finish line on Oxford Road.

The kiddies 2K will start on Oxford Road, outside Emancipation Park, and then left on to Knutsford Boulevard, left on to Dominica Drive, left on to Chelsea Avenue, then left on to Half-Way-Tree Road to the finish line on Oxford Road.

Additionally, patrons can participate in a walk around the Emancipation Park track.

Hydration stops will be located at the start and finished lines and along the race route.

As usual, medical teams will be available to provide first aid to those in need and additional security personnel will be provided along the route.

With preparations for this year's event underway, organisers are looking to register at least 3,000 participants.

Participants are encouraged to visit and for information on registration and secured parking spaces that will be available on the day.

Registration will be open to all individuals and teams (schools, corporate, sports clubs, and other groups) from Saturday, December 15 and will close on Saturday, January 26, 2019. The costs are $1,200 for teams with 50 or more entrants and $1,500 for individuals and teams with fewer than 50 entrants. Teams with over a 100 entrants will receive a complimentary tent. Cash payments can be made to The Heart Foundation of Jamaica located at 28 Beechwood Ave.

Sponsors of the 2019 event are Salada Foods Jamaica Limited, Crystal Spring Water, Foska Oats, Almond Breeze, Nissan Jamaica, Losif Image Solutions, Running Events Limited, NOA Jamaica, National Supply and Jamaica Moves.
