Lightning ends yesterday’s Manning Cup games
Inclement weather interrupted yesterday’s action in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup as a number of matches from the day’s 15-game slate were called off on account lightning in the area.
In Group G, defending champions Kingston College (KC) were leading Dunoon Technical High 2-0 at Breezy Castle when lightning flashed around the venue 10 minutes into the second half. The referee immediately called the players off the field and subsequently postponed the match, which will be concluded at a later date decided by ISSA.
The Group C fixture between St Catherine High and St Andrew Technical High School was abandoned with both teams goalless at half-time, while in Group G, the game between Campion College and Eltham High School was halted with both teams tied at 1-1. The feature game between Calabar and St George’s College was also called off at half-time without any goals scored.
KC took the lead inside two minutes when Christopher Pearson got on the end of a low pass and drilled his one-time effort past Dunoon goalkeeper Richardo Watson.
From there, they had the majority of the chances going forward, and they should have doubled their lead minutes before the break when Shayaun Gayle made a brilliant run on the right with his low pass finding Mathew Bell, but he scuffed his shot wide.
It was 27 minutes before Dunoon had their first shot in anger as Omari Morgan’s free kick deflected off the wall for a corner.
‘The Purples’ found the back of the net again immediately after the restart, when Bell’s through ball found Gayle and he slotted past Watson calmly.
The decision to call the game off came after Monday’s incident at Stadium East when the feature Group E encounter between Wolmer’s and Jamaica College was called off with six minutes remaining when five players were struck by lightning.
