Chin wins doubles title at GTP Cup
JamaicaN junior tennis player John Chin joined forces with Ty Switzer (USA) recently to win the doubles title at the GTP Cup in Noord, Aruba. They defeated the pair of Leon Berg of Germany and Quintan Van Wijk of Curaçao, 6-4, 6-0.
Prior to the doubles win, the No. 1 seed Chin was a finalist in the Under 18 singles event. The match ended with Chin in the runner-up spot to Frederic Vogeli of Switzerland by a 1-6, 2-6 scoreline.
According to Chin, who was pleased with his overall performance “the surface of the center court where we played the singles final was a lot more slick than what I’m used to. My opponent played a fast game, so it suited his game better, but I think I played well to get to both finals, and I picked up some more points towards improving my ITF ranking.”
The 16-year-old overseas-based Chin has been steadily climbing the ITF junior rankings after earning points from his results in recent tournaments overseas. He is currently ranked at 552 in the Under-18 boys’ category. Before playing in Aruba, he had good performances in Cancún and Guadalajara, Mexico.
Chin currently trains in Miramar, Florida, at Dominguez Pro Tennis Academy under the instruction of coach Diego Dominguez.
He has two years left to participate in competitions in his age group. His short-term goal is to qualify for tennis’ junior Grand Slam events, as well as the next Commonwealth Youth Games in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 2021.
Chin plans to continue playing beyond his junior years and looks forward to qualifying for the Pan-American games in Santiago, Chile, in 2023.
