Sasha-Gaye Dawson - determined to succeed
Sasha-Gaye Dawson might still be in high school, but already, the 16-year-old has set a plan for her life, which is to achieve both academic and financial success.
Dawson is a currently in fifth form at the Troy High School in Trelawny and is poised to become the first member of her immediate family to attend university. Her career goal is to do medicine, specialising in psychiatry.
"I don't have a lot of persons in my immediate family who have excelled in academics, so I use that to motivate me as I want to be the person who makes that change in my family," she told Western Focus. "I will be the first person to attend university in my immediate family and I need to make them proud. I love biology and counselling and I love to interact with people, so I want to study psychiatry.
The fifth-former is currently preparing to sit eight subjects in the upcoming Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams slated to begin in May. Her biology teacher, Letisha Elliot, lauds her as an A-student.
"I see Sasha-Gaye going all the way in academics. I see her as a student who could qualify for any opportunities that she would want to go and take hold of as academically, she is on par with the best. She has a conscientious attitude towards her schoolwork and she is the type of student who, if you go to a class and ask to be reminded of what was done in the last class, you can always count on her to answer," Elliot said.
After completing her CSEC exams, in which she will sit mostly science subjects, Dawson plans to go to university. She credits a good teacher-student relationship culture at Troy High for her academic success to date and that which is to follow from her impending exams.
"I have a good relationship with all my teachers. If there is a topic that I do not understand in any subject area, I always go back to my teachers and ask them to explain. I can, especially, depend on my chemistry teacher, Kadian Clarke-Campbell, and my biology teacher, Letisha Elliot. All the teachers are very helpful and will go home late after school just to stay and further explain the lessons to us," she said.

Asked what she would most likely address at her high school if she could be principal for a day, Dawson responded that she would foster better coordination of the prefect body to make it into a more cohesive disciplinary force.
"I would spend most of my time on coordination of the prefect body. I would counsel everyone and host a seminar on how to go about disciplining students without having an altercation with them. Our prefect body needs to be more cohesive, so I would teach them how to support each other as a body," she said.
