DON’T DISCARD THE SEEDS, EAT THEM!
Good eating habits are important for good health. In order to succeed in our quest for good health we should include seeds in our diet. The nutrients contained in seeds to nourish the germinating plant are also very good for our health. Some of the more important seeds will be highlighted.
One of the most important seeds to include in our daily diet is flaxseed but this was discussed in detail recently.
Sunflower seeds are a good source of vitamin E, an antioxidant important for the circulation, the immune system and brain health. It also contains phytosterols which help to lower high cholesterol. Magnesium is another important nutrient found in them which helps with blood pressure, strong bones, migraine and asthma. Have about a 1/4 cup per day.
Pumpkin seeds are a great source of proteins, B-vitamins and L-trytophan. These components make them great for improving mood and energy. They also help prevent the development of kidney stones. Have about 1/2 cup per day.
Chia seeds are powerful and are considered to be one of the superfoods. They are the best plant source of omega 3 (eight times more than salmon), three times more antioxidant of blueberries, 10 times more fibre than rice, seven times more vitamin c than oranges, 2.5 times more proteins than kidney bean, six times more calcium than milk and 10 times more magnesium than broccoli. It is also gluten-free. Have about 1 tablespoon per day.
Grape seeds are another powerhouse. This is especially true of muscadine grapes. They are packed with antioxidants which can be used to treat almost any chronic illness including high cholesterol, arthritis, circulatory disorders, diabetes, hypertension and the list goes on. They also have anti-cancer properties.
Sesame seeds are usually used as a condiment but it's a great source of manganese, copper, calcium, iron, phosphorus and fibre. They contain lignins which are antioxidants and help to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure and the risk of cancer.
Most people when eating pomegranate discard the seeds. They are not only edible but are a good source of fibre and vitamins, namely C and K. The flesh and seeds can then be eaten as one unit.
Hemp seeds are the richest natural source of essential fatty acids, a source of complete proteins and high in phytonutrients.
Seeds should be had raw to preserve the nutrient content. They shouldn't be roasted.
