Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Jamaica, Ambassador Paola Amadei, will be the keynote speaker at the Negril Chamber of Commerce?s Annual Gala Dinner, which will be held at the Aura Lounge at the Swept Away Negril resort, on Saturday, December 12.

According to Vice President of the chamber, Daniel Grizzle, the EU ambassador?s upcoming visit to Negril,is an extension of the longstanding relationship that the chamber has had with the European Union, since its inception.

?The reason we would like to have her, is we have had a great relationship with the European Union. We went to the EU (for funding) to get the first central sewage system for Negril and we know the EU will be playing a larger role in our lives. There is also a large amount of investment by the Spanish and the Italians in Negril and each year the number of European tourists is growing. Also there is the fact that two of the world?s largest tour operators supply guests to Negril - TUI and Thomas Cook - they do business with us and their representatives are here, ? Grizzle explained.

?We want to form as close as possible, ties with the EU representatives here in Jamaica, naturally for economic reasons, but also for the fact that they may be able to help us achieve our environmental goals. Because we want to learn more about for instance, solar electricity. Germany has made some of the most advanced solar panels for electricity. Also, we may also be able to collaborate with them on recycling projects here,? he added.

The Negril Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1983 by Grizzle and several other hoteliers including Manley Wallace. The mission of the chamber is to facilitate sustainable economic development in Negril in the interest of its members and the wider community, through the development of projects, protection and improvement of the tourism product, promotion of Negril as a tourism and investment location.
