PORT-OF-SPAIN (CMC): Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has blanked the latest request for a meeting by environmentalist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh, saying "there will be no productive outcome".

Kublalsingh, who is on an indefinite hunger strike outside the building housing the office of the prime minister, had earlier this week sent a letter to the government indicating that he was prepared to travel to the United States where the prime minister is attending the annual meetings of the United Nations General Assembly for the talks.

Stop construction

Kublalsingh, the leader of the Highway Re-Route Movement, wants the government to stop the construction of the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the multibillion-dollar (one TT dollar = US$0.16 cents) Point Fortin Highway.

He said his new proposal follows talks with residents of the affected villages, and that he believes the "optimum best solution for the Debe to Mon Desir highway can be quickly achieved, and I would like to present this proposal to them if they agree to meet and have sincere dialogue ... ."
