South African athlete Oscar Pistorius' sentencing in relation to the shooting death of his girlfriend is to kick off today.

Last month Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide.

The court ruled that he was negligent when he fired shots through a toilet door in the belief that there was an intruder.

The disgraced sprinter faces up to 15 years in jail, although the judge could suspend the sentence or only impose a fine.

But High Court judge Thokozile Masipa said the state had failed to prove he intended to kill Reeva Steenkamp and therefore dismissed the charge of murder.

South Africa's prosecuting authority said it was disappointed Pistorius was not convicted of murder but said it would wait until after sentencing to decide whether to appeal.

Pistorius was on bail up to the point of his sentencing.
