President Barack Obama is to ask Congress for US$6.2 billion to fight Ebola in West Africa and to avoid it spreading in the US.

Officials say Obama is requesting US$4.5 billion in immediate response funds and more than US$1.5 billion for a contingency fund.

The request came as the World Health Organization released its latest report, putting the number of Ebola cases at 13,042 and the deaths at 4,818.
