KOLKATA, India (AP):

Police disclosed that they have arrested two suspects in the gang rape of an elderly nun in a missionary school in eastern India nearly two weeks ago.

A police officer said the suspects were arrested yesterday after a nationwide hunt. He spoke on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to talk to reporters.

The nun, in her '70s, was hospitalised in serious condition. Christian leaders said a series of attacks on churches since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's right-wing Hindu government came to power in May have created a sense of fear in the community.

Police also are looking for other suspects who attacked the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in West Bengal state, ransacked the chapel, destroyed religious items, and stole cash.
