Sikh college student wins battle with Army over hair, turban

A federal judge has ordered that a Sikh college student from New York be permitted to enrol in the United States (US) Army's Reserve Officer Training Corps without shaving his beard,

cutting his hair, or removing his turban.

US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued the ruling late Friday in Washington.

Iknoor Singh, a Hofstra University student, sued the army last year.

He claimed his goal of someday working in military intelligence was being stymied by the army's policy.

The judge ruled that the army failed to show that Singh's readiness to serve would be diminished if he were permitted a religious accommodation.

Singh said yesterday that he was thrilled by the court ruling and was eager to serve his country.

An army spokesman did not immediately comment.
