MIAMI, Florida (AP):

Hurricane Kate has formed in the Atlantic north of Bermuda, becoming the fourth hurricane of the Atlantic season.

The hurricane's maximum sustained winds up to early yesterday were near 75 mph

(120 kph).

Kate was centred about 260 miles (420 kilometres) north of Bermuda and was moving north-east near 40 mph (65 kph).

The US National Hurricane Centre said swells from Kate would have begun affecting Bermuda, which is likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
