SOUTH CAROLINA (AP):

Volunteers are getting together to make sure that prison inmates in South Carolina have a little bit of holiday cheer.

Volunteers gathered yesterday at St Andrews Baptist Church in Columbia to help unload truckloads of donations which Baptist associations across the state have been collecting for months. The churches collect items for prisoners, including such things as pens, writing tablets, and candy.

The Christmas Packets for Prisoners project is co-sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention and the South Carolina Women's Missionary Union.

In the programme, which has been going on for decades, volunteers collect and bag donated items, add a Christmas card, and then help deliver them to adult inmates in South Carolina's prisons.
