Romanian Senate votes to ban drug ads to stop self-diagnosis
Romanian lawmakers have voted to ban all advertising of prescription drugs and radio and television advertising of over-the-counter medicines in a bid to stop what they said is harmful self-diagnosis.
Senators voted 100-7 yesterday to stop the growing number of medicine ads on television and radio, which Senator Alexandru Vegh claims have "a negative and deceptive influence.
"Patients shouldn't treat themselves ... based on what they heard on the radio or TV," he said.
The measure said the National Medicine Agency will have to approve publicity for non-prescription drugs in other media, such as newspapers.
President Klaus Iohannis needs to sign off on the legislation for it to become law.
