ROSEAU CMC:

Five men are now in custody following an incident on Carnival Monday in which a policeman was severely beaten.

Yesterday, the police reported that the men are being held on suspicion of attempted murder.

Acting Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste said the incident took place on Monday when police officer, Wilburton Jules, approached the group of young men who were behaving in a disorderly manner.

"The group proceeded to attack Constable Jules and inflicted numerous serious injuries to the upper body and head of the Constable of police with a hammer and a rock weighing over 15 pounds."

Jno Baptiste said Jules was assisted by members of the public who called for help.

The cop was taken to hospital where he was admitted.

Two other suspects are being sought in connection with the incident.
