United States President Barack Obama has warned that the threat of terrorists attempting to launch a nuclear attack that would change the world is real.

He says the prospects of the militant group Islamic State obtaining a nuclear weapon is one of the greatest threat to global security.

Despite this, Obama told the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington yesterday that concrete steps have been taken to prevent nuclear terrorism and urged world leaders not to become complacent in safeguarding vulnerable facilities.

More than 50 nations were represented at the summit as world leaders expressed concerns North Korea's nuclear weapons programme and Russia's absence from the talks.

The US President expressed concern that Russia has been building up its military at the expense of nuclear arms reductions.
