The United States Coast Guard says it has seized 550 pounds of cocaine in the Caribbean Sea, worth more than US$8.25 million.

The Coast Guard said that an unidentified man was detained during the interdiction northwest of Aruba.

It said while on joint patrol with the Dutch HNLMS De Zeven Provincien crew, they "detected and interdicted a suspicious vessel northwest of Aruba in international waters.

"Following the interdiction, a total of £550 of contraband was discovered on board the vessel and later tested positive for cocaine.

"The US Coast Guard LEDET and HNLMS De Zeven Provincien crew took custody of the suspect, and seized the vessel and contraband," it added.

The Coast Guard said the suspicious vessel "became inoperable during the transit and was sunk as a danger to navigation".
