Government probing incident involving diplomat
The Haitian government says it has instructed the head of the consulate general of Haiti in Santiago, Judith Exavier, to remain here pending the outcome of an investigation into an incident in which she was detained and questioned by officials in the Dominican Republic last Saturday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Exavier had been asked to remain here while the authorities of both countries “clarify the status of the vehicle” in which she was detained.
On Saturday, the Dominican National Police detained the Haitian diplomat Judith Exavier while she was driving a luxury vehicle, as she was preparing to cross the border of Jimani in the Dominican Republic.
Media reports said that the vehicle had been registered in the name of an alleged member of a money laundering network and that a joint investigation by the Dominican and Haitian authorities had been launched into the matter.
The foreign ministry said that “the results of this investigation will be made public as soon as available,” and in addition, “the Embassy of Haiti in the Dominican Republic has been instructed to collaborate with the Dominican authorities to ensure that all light is shed, at the earliest, on this regrettable incident”.
