Commissioner Bates to be inducted to Broward County Women’s History Coalition

Published: Thursday March 15, 2012 | 9:33 pm Comments 0

Lauderhill, Florida:

Commissioner M.Margaret Bates is to be inducted into the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 25.

The City of Lauderhill’s first African American woman to be elected into office, Commissioner Bates has lived in Lauderhill for over 30 years, more than 40 years in Broward County and has served on the Lauderhill City Commission for 14 years.

Nominated by County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman, a 2001 Broward County Women’s History (BCWHC) Inductee, Commissioner Bates epitomises the qualities the BCWHC seeks; a woman supporting the advancement of women, the pursuit of education for and about women, and advocates for the empowerment and equality of women.

Commissioner Bates dedication to community and service before self approach has earned her numerous honours and accolades; President of the Lauderhill Women’s Club, the Broward League of Cities, and Women in Municipal Government. She has been honoured by the Northwest Federated Women’s Club of Broward County and named “A Woman of Distinction” from both the March of Dimes and the Broward County Boys and Girls Club.

Bates was also named as the Commissioner of the Year for the State of Florida by the Florida League of Cities. She also rallies around various causes such as the 2010 Census, Relay for Life Lauderhill/Lauderdale Lakes Team and created the City’s Public Art Board as well as the City of Lauderhill’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force and its ancillary events for over 12 years.

“This nomination is a tremendous honour. My contributions to women and/or civil rights in general are my way of giving back to a community where my late husband and I successfully raised our family. As a woman and an elected official, I feel it is my responsibility to return the favour and help others. I have met some fantastic ladies over the years. I know that together, we can move mountains!” states Inductee Commissioner Bates.

The luncheon is at 12 noon on Sunday, March 25 at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites (3003 N. University Drive, Sunrise).
