CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC
Plans to introduce a Value Added Tax (VAT) here by September 1 this year will be taken a step further when the St. Lucia House of Assembly meets later Tuesday to debate and adopt the measure.
Earlier this year Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr. Kenny Anthony announced plans to introduce the VAT making the island the last within the nine-member sub-regional Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to do so.
A statement from the office of the Prime Minister late Monday said that the legislation was made public on May 16, this year because it was felt that the population should be given sufficient time to peruse the document in order to sufficiently prepare for the September 1 implementation date.
Since the plan was announced, a VAT implementation team has embarked on a public educational drive to publicise information on the tax.
