GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:
Guyana has scored higher than several Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname and Jamaica, on the 2012 Global Gender Gap Report.

The report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) shows Guyana is ranked Guyana at number 42 out of 135 countries with a score 0.712, higher than Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Suriname, Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname among several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

But the country’s position is lower than its ranking last year, when it was ranked 38. The report said that the decline is due to a small decrease in the percentage of women in ministerial positions.

Nonetheless it notes that Guyanese women have made outstanding contributions to the political, social and economic life of the country through the years, with 30 per cent of its members of parliament being females including the Deputy Speaker.
