PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC - President Michel Martelly has reshuffled his Cabinet for the third time since coming to office 20 months ago.

Martelly, who left here for Miami for “a complete medical check up” ahead of his trip to Chile to attend the summit between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union, last re-shuffled his Cabinet five months ago.

Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, who retains his post as Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, said that the Cabinet shakeup comes after the resignation of several government ministers.

Lamothe, who was expected to travel on Wednesday to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum, told reporters that the 23-member Cabinet will be sworn in before his departure.

He said that US-based Bernice Fidelia, a friend of President Martelly and most recently his liaison with the Haitian Diaspora, will replace sociologist Daniel Supplice as Minister for Haitians Living Abroad.

Magalie Racine, former personal assistant to the first lady and an etiquette coach, is the new Minister for Sports and Youth.

David Bazile, who served as minister of public security during the 2004-2006 interim government and is an ex-member of Haiti’s defunct army, is the new Minister of the Interior.

Lamothe did not mention the portfolios of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Communications in his announcement, which was made just before Martelly left for Miami.

CELAC is currently chaired Chile President Sebastián Piñera and a government statement here said Martelly would place an emphasis during the meeting on the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) countries and European Union.

Martelly is currently holds the chairmanship of the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping.
