Gang members convicted of killing Bermuda footballer

Published: Tuesday February 26, 2013 | 12:36 pm Comments 0

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – A jury has found two members of a gang here guilty of murdering a 22-year-old talented footballer in 2011.

Devon Hewey, 24, and Jay Dill, 23, face the possibility of life imprisonment for the murder of 22-year-old midfielder Randy Robinson. Both men had denied any part in the murder and will be sentenced at a later date.

The court was told that both convicted men were members of the 42 Gang and had targeted Robinson because he had cousins who were part of the rival Parkside gang.

Robinson, who was not a gang member, was gunned down as he walked along a road in March 2011 while en route to joining his father for dinner.

Dill and Hewey were arrested the following month when traces of gunshot residue were found on a jacket belonging to Dill.

Chief Inspector Nick Pedro said afterwards the conviction demonstrated the importance of public assistance in dealing with violent crime.

“This case underscores the difficulties of prosecuting cases in a small community. It also underscores the need for people to come forward and assist the police.

“Here we have again seen another case where people have stood up to the plate and helped the police and the Department of Public Prosecutions in prosecuting a very difficult case and bring two dangerous killers to justice.”
