Boyz XI win 2-0
Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter
WESTERN BUREAU:A Reggae Boyz squad beat the St. James Select team 2-0 at Jarrett Park yesterday as preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches continued.
Winston Griffiths in the 12th minute and substitute Jermaine Johnson in the 85th scored for the national team that was made up of players from the National premier and A-Leagues.
The game was dull and dreary for most part and was played infront of a small crowd, many of whom left before the second goal.
National coach Carl Brown was very critical of the St. James team telling reporters after the game that he was hoping the local organisers would have tried to parade new young talent for the national coaching staff to have a look at.
None of the players on the local team impressed Brown who said, "Not a whole lot was achieved as we did not see any new players."
The game was billed as a chance for western based players to show off their skills infront of the new technical director Sebastiao Lazaroni but Brown said he was less than impressed with former national Under 23 player Markino Gillings who was the only player on show that he thought had any chance of getting into the programme any time soon.
Brown dismissed the chances of former national striker Paul "Tegat' Davis saying "if we have to go back to Tegat, we are in a whole lot of problems."
As for the national team, Brown said he hoped the games would help to develop confidence in the players in the squad as the World Cup qualifying got nearer.
The national team took the lead early in the game when Griffiths got behind the St. James defence on the right side, dribbled forward and beat the advancing Airlock Henry to the far post.
Henry, a former national invitee was called on to make two good saves later in the game, both against Oniel McDonald who once again failed to impress. Henry blocked a point blank shot in the 27th minute then five minutes later went full stretch to his left to parry a shot from just outside the six yards box.
