Seaga to quit?

DEPUTY LEADER of the Jamaica Labour Party Olivia "Babsy" Grange last night declined to confirm or deny a radio report that party leader Edward Seaga had threatened to resign by October unless certain things were in place by then.

"It is a policy position that we cannot discuss internal party matters in public," Miss Grange told The Gleaner last night.

According a report on HOT 102's Nationwide programme yesterday, Mr. Seaga had written party officers responding to their concerns that his continuing leadership of the party was hurting its chances of forming the next government.

With reference to concerns about how his financial debts might be hurting the party, he is quoted as having told the officers that he would be clearing off his debts in a matter of weeks.

The report quoted Mr. Seaga as saying that he would quit if they failed to ensure that every constituency and parish council division had an effective JLP representative and organisation in place.

Mr. Seaga could not be reached for comment last night.
