Excelsior won 26-14. IN an unexciting, error-filled three-hour game of softball at the Stadium West Diamond yesterday Excelsior High defeated St. Hugh's 26-14 in the final of the INSPORTS Schoolgirls Junior League.
The match which was slated for seven innings did not go through as planned due to the dominant display of fielding and batting by Excelsior, which ended the match by the 10-run rule. When the rule was called St. Hugh's were all-out in the top of the fourth innings with three runs.
It was a fulfilling victory for the Excelsior girls who went down 7-9 to Kingston Technical in the final of the Senior League in May of this year.
"I am satisfied with the victory," said Frank Brown, coach of the unbeaten champions who topped Zone 'B' with eight win from eight matches to reach the final.
"The batting and fielding were good. From the third innings we had the control and I don't believe they (St. Hugh's) played below-par. It's just that we came out and batted well. That was what won us the game," Brown added.
Anthony Malcolm, coach of St. Hugh's was a disappointed man.
"They allowed the other team to settle before them. I think my players came in with a lazy attitude. It's the laziest I have seen them play," explained Malcolm whose team topped Zone 'A' unbeaten from seven starts coming into the final.
