Cops, Knight, DPP to hold emergency meeting

Knight

MINISTER OF National Security and Justice K.D. Knight and Police Commissioner Francis Forbes have called an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning in Kingston, following Friday's shooting of six persons when police officers fired on a minibus.

The Director of Public Prosecutions is also to attend the 11 a.m. meeting, to be held at the National Arena, along with members of all ranks of the police in the Corporate Area and St. Catherine.

On Friday police officers fired shots on a bus which runs the Spanish Town to Half Way Tree route after reportedly receiving information that the bus was carrying gunmen.

The bus was signalled to stop and the driver, according to the police, ignored the order. A chase ensued and ended at the Three Miles round-about when shots were fired on the bus.

Removed from duty

All passengers were searched, but neither guns nor contraband was reportedly found. The police's Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) said that the officers involved have been removed from front-line duty pending further investigations.

The CCN said the matters to be discussed tomorrow will include legal and moral issues relating to the use of deadly force and the police's relationship with the public.
