Marvin Harriot THE 'BOOM boom' song has been knocking on the door of fame for Marvin Harriot and might well thrust it open next weekend when the National Popular Song finals are held.
Like many entrants of the recent past, Feel The Boom is rhythmically appealing. But, Harriot's offering has something else, possessing a melodic and lyrical intelligence that will have many nodding their heads and shaking their feet in startled appreciation.
The song probes the reasons behind the international fame of reggae, the music from 'this little island' and goes on to explain that this song is rooted in authenticity, in being 'hardcore'. Further, it wittily traces the history of the genre, from the early 1960s to the current times of national reggae festivals.
Harriot is both the songwriter as well as singer. Musical arranger is M3, Vincent Morgan of the Original Soul Defenders and of Studio One fame.
Harriot admitted that he was concerned with the prevailing lack of quality in the music, stating, "I think we are in reverse." He, however, looks forward to the day when he will have his own studio and will tap into the talent of the grassroots.
"Believe me, there is a lot of talent out there," he said.
While this is his first public appearance, Harriot has been writing songs all his life.
"I have been writing songs as long as I can remember. I like to be by myself and when I am by myself I get the vibe," he continued
Why the 'Cabbie' and father of three from Linstead waited 39 years to share a really beautiful voice and such lyrical intelligence with us is not quite clear.
Right now, he is confident of a good placing in the National Pop Song contest finals. He may yet succeed.
