Stephen Shaw-Naar concert for Sunday

Shaw-Naar

STEPHEN SHAW-NAAR will give a piano recital on Sunday, July 30, at the Jamaica School of Music Auditorium, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, beginning 6:30p.m.

Mr. Shaw-Naar began his early piano training at age 14, under the tutelage of Ruth Creightney and later with Jamaican concert pianist, David Johns. It was under his guidance that he sat the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Advanced Certificate Examination in Piano and earned the first distinction awarded in the Caribbean since the inception of the examination.

In the 1996 Association of Music Teachers (Jamaica) Music Festival, Mr. Shaw-Naar was awarded the Jean Anderson Memorial Trophy for his performance in the Chopin class, and the Association of Music Teachers' Trophy for his performance of music by a Jamaican composer.

Mr. Shaw-Naar was awarded the Chancellor's Scholarship at Texas Christian University (TCU, former home of the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition); he begins his final of four years of study towards a Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance next month. He is on the Dean's Honour List of the College of Fine Arts & Communication, a member of the Golden Key Academic Honour Society, and was nominated an All-American Scholar.

Mr. Shaw-Naar is a piano student of Mr. Jose Feghali, gold medallist at the 7th Van Cliburn Competition, and has also studied extensive repertoire for two pianos with close friend, Melissa Sky-Eagle, coached by John Owings, winner of the inaugural Caadesus Piano Competition.

Sunday's programme will include: Mendelssohn's Variations serienses, Ravel's Jeux d'ean, Polanaise, Op. 53, Chopin and Liszt's Sonata.
