McLean bowls WI to victory

McLean.. bagged five wickets for 49 runs.

LEEDS, CANA, -

VINCENTIAN pacer Nixon McLean grabbed five wickets to bowl the West Indies to a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire on the second day of their three-day tour match at Headingley yesterday.

The Windies flexed their muscles for the third Test match to reduce Yorkshire to 94 all out in their second innings and, set 12 runs to win, cruised to victory without the loss of a wicket.

The Windies, resuming at their overnight score of 83-4, slipped to 209 all out, as fast bowler Lesroy Weekes from Montserrat claimed 6-56.

Mahendra Nagamootoo, Wayne Phillip and Ramnaresh Sarwan were the West Indies' leading scorers as they responded to Yorkshire's first innings 126 all out.

Nagamootoo made the top score of 40 from 74 balls and Phillip, missed by David Byas in the slips before he had scored, went on to pull Lesroy Weekes for six on his way to 38 from 103 balls which also included five fours. Sarwan scored 32.

After an opening burst by Courtney Walsh in which he grabbed the wicket of Simon Wippud caught in the slips from a lifter, McLean finished with 5-49 to take the man of the match award.

Yorkshire slumped to 16-4 and at tea were facing a humiliating innings defeat on 30-5.

But Byas held firm for the second time in the match, hitting four boundaries in an 83-minute stay before edging McLean to third slip with Yorkshire still 12 runs adrift.

Weekes, who had bowled superbly for Yorkshire, joined forces with Ian Fisher to put them ahead but legspinner Nagamootoo had him stumped and Fisher lost his off stump to McLean.

The West Indies then achieved their win without any alarm with Chris Gayle driving James Middlebrook over long-off for six before the winning run came.

The West Indies/England Test series is locked at 1-1 and the third Test starts at Old Trafford on August 3.
