Jamaica to battle New Zealand in semi-finals

CARDIFF, Wales, CANA -

JAMAICA will face unbeaten New Zealand in today's World Youth (Under-21) Netball Championship semi-finals after whipping Scotland 77-18 in their quarter-final match at the University of Wales on Wednesday.

The Jamaicans held quarterly leads of 25-3, 46-10, and 62-12 for the 59-goal margin, their fifth victory in six games so far at the tournament.

New Zealand were also emphatic in their quarter-final win, outplaying Malaysia 91-19.

In other results, reigning champions Australia dismissed Wales 83-19, and England outscored South Africa 60-28.

The semi-finals will be played at the Cardiff International Arena.

Jamaica, fifth at the 1996 world youth tournament in Canada, were never threatened by their British opponents, whose goalkeeper Lorna Paisley had a good game despite of her team's heavy loss.

Edmarie Lumbsley scored 32 goals from 37 attempts for Jamaica before being substituted in the second quarter with a long-standing ankle injury.

The six-foot-six-inch shooter, who is on a basketball scholarship in the United States, should be fit for the semi-final against the Kiwis as the substitution was a precaution to prevent further damage. Her replacement Tomika Hall scored 28 goals from 33 tries, and Jamaica's other goals came from goal attack players Noreen Lafayette (14/16), and Simone Forbes (3/4).

For Scotland, goal attack Lesley McDonald (8/20) and goal shooter Jennifer Dingwall (7/7) led the scoring.

New Zealand, in complete control, made nine positional changes at halftime and cruised to their win over Malaysia by 78 goals, the biggest margin of victory in the quarter-finals.

Australia, who handed Jamaica their only defeat of the tournament so far, exhibited championship-winning form with their 64-goal success over hosts Wales. The Aussies were superior in every department.

Australia's semi-final opponents England recovered from a slow start against South Africa, combined well in attack and took control for their easy win.
