THE UNIVERSITY Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) has announced plans to make its pharmacy more competitive in order to boost revenue.
The pharmacy, which recently upgraded its physical infrastructure and the range of services it offers, will offer low cost drugs and prescriptions as it moves toward making customer service the base of operations.
"Because it is a department of the hospital, the pharmacy is entitled to purchase pharmaceuticals at reduced rates and these savings will be passed onto consumers," the UHWI said.
According to the hospital's administration, as it becomes more commercialised, the pharmacy plans to cater to specific needs to become more profitable. One group being targeted are doctors at the hospital. The pharmacy is to fill prescriptions for public and private patients of doctors on staff but will extend its services to patients from doctors who are not a part of the hospital, provided that the drugs that they are seeking are in short supply, or, are not available at outside retailers.
"UHWI refurbished the department so it could take on a more supportive role in the hospital, much like pharmacies attached to medical centres," the hospital said.
The pharmacy is also remaining open for longer hours, closing at 9p.m. Monday through Friday and at 4p.m. on weekends.
