Politicians and accountability

THE EDITOR, Madam:

THE MEDIA reported recently that in Yola, Nigeria, the residents gave Mr. Sahabo Mahmoud, a politician, a sound beating for failing to deliver on his election promises.

At a public forum, the residents of this northern Nigerian city asked Mr. Mahmoud to identify any visible project executed by him since he was elected Council Chairman.

After waiting in vain for Mr. Mahmoud's response, the crowd descended on him and beat him up "to teach him a lesson."

At no time do I condone violence especially in today's Jamaica.

Politicians should have annual forums to account to their constituents on their stewardship. If this kind of accountability is brought to bear on our local politicians I am sure that honesty and integrity would eventually become a way of life in our political arena.

I am, etc.,
