In support of Merlene

THE EDITOR, Madam:

MERLENE OTTEY has been and still is an icon in track and field not only on the national level but international level as well.

She was unfortunately accused of taking Nandralone to enhance her performance. This has kept her back for a year, when she should have been preparing for the most prestigious event on the track and field calendar, the Olympics. Thank God she was freed. Merlene was given the green light three weeks before our National Olympic trials. She competed in the 100 metres, once before she came to the island to participate in the trials running 11.4 seconds.

At the trials she placed fourth qualifying her for the relays, but not one of the three top spots for the individual 100 metres. However competing in the 100 metres was her goal. Considering the fact that Merlene was deprived of proper preparations, in the way of active competition to lower her times, I would consider giving her the edge over the third place winner, all three as a matter of fact.

At this point in time, Merlene is running faster than any of those girls and with more competition, I am sure that come September 25 when the track and field events start, Merlene Ottey, will be the fastest sprinter Jamaica has in Sydney, and the only one who will run 10.8 seconds.

To the JAAA I am begging you please use whatever power you have to ensure that Merlene competes in the 100 metres. I am asking this governing body not to make this nation scatter roses after the event has gone, but let good sense prevail and manage effectively and efficiently, and let us put our best foot forward, for the best results.

Merlene can medal at Sydney, please give her the chance to do so.

I am, etc.,

REGINA MONTAGUE
