THE EDITOR, Madam:
I AM a Jamaican living in the Unites States, and I cannot tell you how much it grieves me to read about the crime rate in Jamaica. I am literally in fear of coming back to the country that I was born in, due to the fact that I cannot bank on my safety.
The government has been trying to tackle the economy, I suppose, and maybe in their minds, that should be the rectified first and foremost. However the fact that there are no new jobs created or that current businesses are closing down should be an indicator to the government that crime is playing a very pivotal role in the growth of the economy.
We have to attract new business and foreign investors to our economy, and with the way things are, I would be ashamed to even recommend any investor to Jamaica at this time. I have had my co-workers send me articles over the Internet about the crime situation in Jamaica, and all I have to say is that the country is going downhill.
Will I be stupid enough to come to Jamaica, and invest in the economy, when I am downright fearful for my life? No way! With me being a Jamaican, and having that paranoia, what would a foreigner say?
The reason the economy is not getting any better, is because the government is not giving crime the priority that it deserves, and until that happens, we will be trying to leave the island as the Cubans are leaving Cuba.
I am etc,
