THE Roper Cup was shared at Emmet Park last Saturday as the under 35 and shoolboy Manning Cup teams from St. George's College and Kingston College ended 1-1 each.
The under 35 masters provided a lot of fun for the fair-sized crowd at St. George's college, however, it was the schoolboys' clash in the second leg-match which proved more interesting.
Kingston College produced a lacklustre performance for almost the entire game until Steveland Vernon's shot in the 78th minute levelled the scores 1-1 after Jermaine Spence had put St. George's College ahead in the 32nd minute.
Coach of KC Stratton Palmer said his team played below par but he was not too disappointed as he had not fielded his top players.
"This was not our strongest team we, have a couple of players who are out," said Palmer. "I think they played below par today, I don't know what caused it, I don't know if we ate too late or it was a level of anxiety."
Ainsworth Beckford, coach of St. George's College said: "As usual we have to wait on CXC results to determine whether we will have a very strong team. If the results go in our favour we should do very well this season."
KC were the aggressors in the early stages of the first half but were kept at bay by strong defending by St. George's College.
It was St. George's who broke the deadlock 13 minutes before the end of the half. After fumbling a corner kick in a crowded six-yard box, Spence found his control to volley over the head of KC goalkeeper Daniel Bradshaw.
Down 1-0 KC started pushed hard for the equaliser but their forwards fell victim on numerous occasions to the St. George's offside trap.
The Kingston College over 35 team won the Pancho Rankine Cup beating St. George's College 2-0.
