CAMPERDOWN High school should start the 2000 Manning Cup season as one of the favourites to win the competition.
With former national player and past student Barrington "Cobra" Gaynor now at the helm in addition to the abundance of talent with which to work, the east Kingston team should be difficult to beat.
National under-17 player Kevin King is among nine returnees on whom the hopes of the school will be pinned.
Bernard Walters, Simon Bennett, Kevin Wallace, Jermaine Johnson, Dean Robinson, Hillary Little, Marvin Brown and Damion Palmer are the remaining eight.
Gaynor is impressed with what he has seen during the build up and expects his charges to do well. "There is vibes in the camp. The players are building a chemistry. Defensively we are sound..... we have a good goalkeeper," said Gaynor.
"I think we should be able to make it to the semi-finals and then we'll take it from there," added the veteran Harbour View defender.
Camperdown, three-time winners of the Manning Cup in 1978, 1979 and 1982 have been impressive in their pre-season games. They outscored Rae Town 4-2, got by Vere Technical 2-0, drubbed St. Thomas Technical 4-0, clipped Kingston Technical 2-1, edged Glenmuir 1-0 and drew 1-1 with Donald Quarrie. Against Dunoon Technical they were on the receiving end, losing 0-1.
Camperdown who open their account on September 5 against Penwood Comprehensive, should depend mainly on the efforts of Robinson, King and Johnson to guide them through.
