The church's big role

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I NOTICED in The Sunday Gleaner about people can't get jobs, etc., and the church is also to blame. We here at Meadowbrook United Church do our part, as other churches do. But the churches never get a thank you. Right through the year the church premises are open.

We teach people to bake, culinary arts etc., and most of the people who graduate, leave with a certificate. They get jobs, and feel good. We have three schools, high school, prep school, basic school and a day care centre. These facilities employ a lot of people to work, clean, gardening and so on.

Most of the funds to do these programmes come from the offering and gifts from a number of people. At the schools, some parents have to pay the school fee in instalments. We have a scheme for school fees, books, uniforms. An agreement is worked out with the parents to pay the school fee in parts, get the uniforms through the church, and pay in parts for books, lunch, etc.

Our job is to do our best for all mankind. So please check out what the churches in Jamaica do. Ninety-five per cent of all the schools in Jamaica are on church property and most are run by the churches. These are the facts.

I am, etc.,
