Letter of the Day - A 'gay' backlash?
THE EDITOR, Madam: I MUST say that I left the 62nd annual conference of the People's National Party (PNP) last Sunday a very depressed (gay) man. As someone who supports the PNP's policies and defends the party in every sector of the society, I found it disturbing that the Prime Minister took such broadside against homosexuality. I had previously thought you, Mr. Prime Minister, were very liberal in your views on this matter, but it's evident that I overestimated you. Mr. Prime Minister, did you know that you have a significant amount of gay people who are both delegates and grassroots supporters of the party? I can assure you there was a large per cent of homosexuals at the party's public session on Sunday and among the delegates both Friday and Saturday. A dedicated (former?) PNP supporter, I was among the persons present for all three days of the conference. Mr. Prime Minister, I can tell you that, already, some of my gay friends have said they will not vote for the PNP in the next elections, strictly in light of this public attack on homosexuality. In case you haven't noticed, it's not only gay persons who are reacting negatively to your blasphemy. In fact, a significant portion of the (voting) public are unimpressed by your public demonstration of blatant intolerance. I am, etc., STEVEN ALEXANDERS Jacks Hill Road Kingston 6 E-mail: Lash70@Legislator.com
