SINGJAY ARTISTE and songwriter Patchie is not in the most comfortable of moods these days. He feels he is not receiving credit due to him or his contribution to the song The Business.
Since the song became popular several weeks ago, media reports have indicated that the song was written solely by Monster Shack DJ General B, who performs the song along with Patchie.
"It's not nice to know that I did so much work on that song and people refuse to give me credit. It's not like I just helped to write it, but I also performed on the song," he explained.
The Business takes a comical look at the monikers used by local entertainers as well as the slang and profiles they use to create their identities.
"I just want the world to know that Patchie is one of the artistes on the song, along with General B. I don't want to suggest that anything was done intentionally, but I just want my slice of the cake as an emerging artiste," he said.
Patchie's real name is Paul Wright. He is 28 years old and hails from east Kingston. He attended the Windward Road All Age and Kingston Secondary schools. He began his career as a DJ, but has changed to the middle-of-the-road style of singjaying.
"When I was deejaying it sounded almost like I was singing. Collin Roache encouraged me to try to singjay and it has worked out beautifully," he said.
In addition to The Business, he has releases such as Say No on the Scarface rhythm for Shocking Vibes records and Crying Time done with Mega Banton. Patchie believes that dancehall music can advance much further if there was greater co-operation among the main players.
"There is too much selfishness in the music business right now. Producers, artistes and all the main people need to co-operate. Some producers will see a youth with talent and refuse to spend their money to develop that talent. As soon as they see someone else working with you, they try to snatch you away when there are lots of other youths out there who want a chance. In addition, people need to stop fighting down other people's work," he stated.
Patchie said he wants to concentrate on learning the rudiments of music. He has already gone through voice training and playing an instrument fits into his future plans.
"I am still recording a lot of songs with the hope of releasing an album, but meanwhile I am getting good experience as an opening act for the Shocking Vibes Crew," he said.
