New products for the banana industry

SEVERAL NEW products to be used in the development of the banana industry were introduced by Agro Grace during a special demonstration held at the St. Mary Banana Estate.

The products include the SICO 250 EL, said to be a highly effective fungicide, as well as closed system equipment to facilitate the mixing of fungicide without user contact with the concentrate.

The products which are suitable alternatives to chemicals currently being used in the industry, are highly effective and more environment-friendly. They are expected to provide effective resistance to the Black Sigatoka disease, says a Jamaica Information Service release.

Agriculture Minister, Roger Clarke, said any product, which could effectively control the disease would receive his blessing.

The Agriculture Minister, having stated his concern about the increasing number of young people who were leaving rural districts for urban areas, said a stabilised banana industry would attract them to farming and help to stem the flow.
