Police warns criminals to stay away from St Elizabeth

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

SUPERINTENDENT OF Police in charge of the St. Elizabeth Divi-sion, Herman Brown, is sending a message to criminals that there is no safe haven in the parish for those who have fled Kingston to the rural areas.

He was speaking against the background of rising major crimes in his division.

Speaking with The Gleaner at his office on Wednesday the police officer said to date, some 168 major crimes have been committed, 49 more than the corresponding period last year.

He added, however, that 64 per cent of crimes committed in the parish have been cleared up.

Mr. Brown said among the major crimes committed in the parish were carnal abuse which he described as stable. He added, however, that murder was increasing.

Measures put in place to address the situation include more police patrols in the more volatile areas of the parish, and sensitising neighbourhood watch groups to their role in helping to fight crime in their area.

He noted that several meetings were held with business interests in the parish, educating them on ways to protect their businesses.
