My side - 'Thank God I am an atheist'

THE EDITOR, Madam:

MR. RONALD THWAITES' stance on gay rights and Jamaicans hanging wilful murders is (doing) the "justice of God"? I beg to differ! A.A. White's letter expressing (10/4/00) the 'Christian perspective' to MP Thwaites' 'stance on gay rights' and the death penalty could be as confusing and contradictory as the Bible's teachings itself.

If one were to follow the Bible and even one of its 10 commandments, "Thou shall not kill" should mean exactly what it says and the inane justification to 'kill a killer' could not have any Christian grounds whatsoever.

I think Mr. Thwaites is following his Christian God's commandments two of them at least, by not supporting killing and by loving his neighbour.

Now, I wonder aloud how pleased this God will be to see mere mortals taking it upon themselves to carry out 'His' justice by killing Jamaicans when the only tangible evidence of His wishes, the 10 Commandments, states quite the opposite! Thank God, I'm an atheist.

I am etc.,

I.P. DALEY
