LIFE HAS become so busy. So often something else is added to an already hectic schedule and we can hardly escape running from one appointment to another. We have the challenge and responsibility to choose between URGENT and IMPORTANT. Let us reflect on St. Luke 10; 38-42, as we highlight the story of two sisters and their individual choices.
Martha's choice
Martha was very concerned about the number of things that needed to be done. Her priority was to make sure that the house was well-kept, the meal properly prepared and all was in order. Her commitment to get the choices done is very typical of so many Jamaicans.
Mary's choice
Mary seemed unconcerned about whatever else was happening around her. Her focus was on Jesus as she, "sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said (See St. Luke 10: 39b). We have so much to learn from Mary. In spite of the many things that compete for our time and attention, our priority ought to be spending time with Jesus, listening to what He is saying. Very often, when we hear from Jesus, we realise that there is another perspective that which we consider urgent.
The master's
conclusion
As we examine our personal lifestyles, the master's conclusion as directed to Martha can be very instructive to us; "You are worried about many things, but one thing is needed". (St. Luke 10;41b). May we be like Mary and choose 'what is better' and ensure that 'it will not be taken away from (her) us'. (See St. Luke 10:42)
PRAYER
Dear God, Forgive us for having conducted our lives with confused priorities. We have gone after the urgent and left the important undone. We now commit ourselves to spending time with You. Help us to listen to, and be obedient to You.
